Nick’s Picks is back for a very special new release… the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’… Enjoy!

Classic? Yes. Brilliant? Yes. Masterpiece? YES!

Show the infamous “prism” album cover to nearly anyone in the world and they will find it instantly recognizable, as I believe there is at least 3-4 million people who own a t-shirt with some variation of the artwork right now in 2023…50 years on from it’s historic release. There are few words that have yet to be said about “The Dark Side of the Moon”. it is without question one of the most iconic albums of all time but past the artwork, recognizable songs and obvious fashion statement lies one of the deepest and most rewarding listening experiences one could ask for.

As a lifelong vinyl collector, I feel this is the #1 “Must Own” album in the format. Why? To me, this album encompasses everything great about vinyl. The gatefold jacket, the running order of the album and of course the original “goodies” including 2 different posters and two stickers. Opening this record and exploring is truly what this physical format is all about! I also believe this is an album that must be taken in in its entirety! Don’t skip around or you’ll miss something.

As you may have seen me mention before, I love to listen to records with quality headphones, “Dark Side” very well may be the ultimate headphone record (along with Electric LadyLand by Hendrix) and listening to it this way will reveal many different elements unheard in a regular stereo speaker configuration

What can be said about the songs/tracks specifically? Just incredible all the way around. From what i like to call “the float” of “Breathe” to the lyrical genius of “Time”, the jaw dropping vocal of “Great Gig in the Sky”, “Us and Them”’s Wall of Sound and the closing 1-2 punch of “Brain Damage/Eclipse” from front to back there is not a track to miss.

To celebrate it’s 50th birthday, Pink Floyd will release a behemoth of a box set this Friday featuring a brand new remix of the classic album on CD and Vinyl, an outstanding live performance from the legendary Wembley Empire Pool of the entire album recorded in 1974 on CD and Vinyl, 2 hardcover books, 2 7” singles, 2 Blu Ray discs and a handful of other surprises! It’s worth noting that the 74 live show will be available as a stand alone release on both LP and CD for the first time ever! The live show is of incredible sound quality and performance. We will have all of the various formats in stock and at special prices to celebrate this historic anniversary!

This is without a doubt one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. I could write paragraphs upon paragraphs of what it’s meant to me and how much I love it but the greatest thing above all, at least for me, Is that even after hearing this album over and over again 1000s of time, each time I hear it something new revels itself, something I missed the last time around. You can’t say that about many records that are celebrating a 50 year anniversary. A masterpiece that I am truly grateful for!

Nick

What can be said about this historic record? It was a complete game changer when first released on this day 56 years ago. From the opening “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” To the majestic “I’m Waiting for the Day” to the unbelievable “God Only Knows”, “Pet Sounds” forced everyone to recognize The Beach Boys and more specifically Brian Wilson as something more than a group that sang about surfing and cars but rather a cultural phenomenon capable of making even The Beatles question if they were doing things correctly (They were as Sgt. Pepper was made in direct response to “Pet Sounds”).
